Antique of the Month - Kerosene Lamps

Here are photos of one of ten Victorian and Edwardian-era kerosene lamps (two of these have been converted to electricity) that are in the Historic Johanna Brotch House at 515 East Lincoln Avenue in Bay View.

This one stands about 2.5 feet tall and has the most ornate shade of the three, as it not only contains etching but also slowly transitions from clear to pink from bottom to top and the design is quite ornate.

The clear chimney at the very top appears to be original and contains an anchor engraved into the glass near its top.

The bowl that holds the kerosene may also have been colored to fade from gold at the bottom to clear at the top, however, this may and probably is the coloration due to containing kerosene over the years.

The bottom half of the lamp I believe to be solid brass that is now seriously tarnished.  I bought it this way.  However, I am going to attempt to remove this tarnish in a future episode on my YouTube channel, “Bay View:  Town of Lake CAPTAINS! so be sure to look for it.  Of particular interest is the ornate scrolling of the brass, to include the pleats at top.  Also note the shield with lions engraved and mounted on the vertical post.

I keep this lamp in the front parlor at Johanna’s house.  It’s a beauty, and certainly no one in the world today could begin to approach making anything like it…hope you enjoy these photos of it!
